Exchange rate on a date: official RBA rates to Australian dollars

Last reviewed 13 October 2026 · General information, not advice

Converting a foreign amount to Australian dollars for a specific day — an overseas property's value when you became an Australian resident, a sale price, rent received? This looks up the Reserve Bank of Australia's published rate for that date.

Which rate should I use?

The ATO generally expects foreign amounts to be translated at the exchange rate at the time of each transaction, and accepts rates from the Reserve Bank of Australia. For some regular income the ATO also publishes average rates you may be able to use instead. Your accountant decides which applies to you.

Keep a note of

  • The rate, its source (RBA) and the date it applies to, next to every converted figure.
  • Why you picked that date (for example: contract date, settlement date, the day you became a resident).

Rates cover the currencies in the RBA's daily table F11.1. For dates before those shown here, use the RBA's historical exchange rate tables.
